THC Seeds: Ceiling, Floor and the Grower in the Middle

  • octobre 21, 2026
  • Denis Carriere

Look at almost any pack of high-THC seeds and there on the label is a number: twenty-five percent, twenty-eight, 30. It is stated with as much certainty as the seed count, and it is not remotely as reliable. The seed does not contain a percentage; it contains a potential, and the number on the pack is a record of how near to that ceiling one grower, under one particular set of lights, on one occasion came. Shops such as https://potentthcseeds.com list lines carrying tested results as high as 30 percent, and this article is a map to what sits between that figure and the jar on your own shelf: how the test result is generated, why it varies, what the you can control and what the genetics settles before it is ever planted.

One Plant, One Lab, One Afternoon

A THC percentage on a seed listing originates from a lab test of dried flower. A grower, typically the breeder or a contracted evaluation grower, grew the line, chose a plant, harvested a sample, and submitted it to a lab. The lab measured cannabinoid content as a share of dry weight and returned a report. The number on the pack is almost always the best certificate from that process, not the average.

Several things follow from that. The number refers to a single phenotype out of a pack that holds many. It describes that plant under the test grower’s conditions, which are seldom typical. And it describes a few grams taken from a particular place on the plant, usually the top of the main cola, where trichome density is highest. Potent THC Seeds posts the lab report for every listed figure, including the number of plants tested, which is 12 plants on most current lines, so the range is on view next to the top result.

Two Numbers That Look Like One

Open a cannabinoid report and the largest figure is normally THCA, the acid form that the living plant produces. THCA converts to THC with heat, and during the conversion it loses a carboxyl group, which removes about twelve percent of its weight along with it. A sample showing twenty-five percent THCA contains around twenty-two percent available THC once heated.

Seed listings quote the THCA figure because it is the bigger one. Some add the minor amount of already-converted THC on top of it and skip the weight adjustment, which pushes the figure further. Neither is dishonest, exactly; it is common practice, and the convention leans towards the higher figure. The honest way to compare between two lines is on « total THC », worked out as THC plus about 0.88 times THCA, and a report that gives that figure on its own is a sign of something.

Phenotype Variance

Grow a full pack of a high-THC line and the results will not each hit the label. Also in a well-bred line the spread between the lowest and strongest plant can be five or more percentage points, and in a less stable line it can be more. The number on the pack lives at the top of that range; most plants sit somewhere beneath it.

That is not a failure in the seed, it is what sexual reproduction means. Cuttings repeat a one plant; seeds reproduce a gene pool. For the grower this has a single practical consequence: growing several seeds and keeping the best frosty plant is the one way to get close to the stated number consistently, and a person that plants one seed and expects the advertised number is betting on a lottery that they did not realise they had entered.

Genetics Sets the Limit

The clearest way to think is as two limits for every plant. The ceiling is genetic: the highest THC that plant can produce under ideal care. Nothing in the nutrient regime, light or technique raises it. The floor is set by the room: how much under the ceiling the plant lands because something was wrong.

The great majority of small grows finish a long way below the ceiling, and the gap is nearly entirely in the grower’s hands. Which means a conclusion the marketing seldom states: for a grower not yet reaching the ceiling of a twenty-percent line, a 30-percent seed will not help. The extra headroom stays untapped above the identical limits. Choosing higher genetics makes sense after the current ones are already grown close to the ceiling.

Closing the Gap

Between seed and the floor lie a handful of variables that are responsible for almost the whole difference, and not one of them is complicated.

  • Drying and curing. Fast, fast drying burns off volatile compounds and converts THC to CBN; a slow dry and a proper cure hold both potency and the profile that gives it its character.
  • Light intensity in flower. Trichome output tracks photon intensity until a limit the majority of home lamps do not reach. Underlit flowers finish looser and weaker regardless of the genetics.
  • Harvest window. THC peaks when most trichome heads are cloudy and only a minority are amber; earlier it has not finished forming, later it degrades into CBN. A week either way costs measurable potency.
  • Plant health through flower. Feeding problems, insects and stress in the last month divert the plant’s energy away from trichome production. A clean, untroubled plant finishes nearer its ceiling.

How the Numbers Got Inflated

Forty years ago a tested THC figure over ten percent was remarkable. Decades of breeding towards resin, controlled cultivation and improved laboratories moved the typical figure upward over the next decades, and somewhere during that rise the percentage became from a measurement into a marketing point.

Once buyers began picking on the number, sellers began producing numbers: testing many samples and publishing the highest, listing THCA in place of THC, using labs reputed for generous results. None of those habits altered any seed. What genetics did get stronger, yet the distance between the advertised figure and the typical result grew more quickly than the genetics did. A figure of 30 percent in the current market deserves the exact same scrutiny as any other: measured by whom, on how many plants, and reported as THCA or as total THC.

Diminishing Returns Above Twenty

There is an awkward point the number does not express: above a certain level, the perceived difference between shrinks. The difference between twelve and twenty percent is unmistakable to anyone; the difference between twenty-five and thirty is frequently lost behind the influence of terpenes, minor cannabinoids, the way the flower was dried and the way it was consumed.

That does not make the figure useless; it makes it one input among several. A well-grown, properly cured twenty-two percent flower with a rich terpene profile routinely reads as more potent than a poorly handled twenty-eight. For a buyer picking seeds, the useful reading is simple: use the percentage to exclude weak lines, and after that decide between the strong ones by aroma, growth structure and breeder reputation, not on the final few percent.

How to Read a High-THC Listing

Everything above comes down to a few checks that are worth asking of any high-THC listing ahead of buying.

  • Is a range given, or only a single top figure? A range means several plants were tested; a lone figure usually indicates one.
  • Is the testing laboratory named and the report viewable? Unverifiable figures are claims, whatever they look like.
  • Is the number given as THCA, THC or total THC? The total is the honest one; THCA alone inflates by about a twelfth.
  • Does the terpene profile sound like a particular plant or like a list of flavour words? A breeder who grew the line knows it specifically.

Before You Buy

Potent THC Seeds sends each order in unmarked packaging with the breeder’s packs sealed inside and no on the outside to indicate the contents. Orders to the United States are not accepted, because seed import is restricted there. Seed law differs widely by country: in a good number of places buying seeds is legal as souvenirs while germinating them is not, and in others both are permitted under licence or both is. Knowing the position where you live is the buyer’s job, and nothing of this article should be read as legal advice.
